Yoga Garden SF recently took the position of supporting the SF MTA’s plan to create a bike lane to connect the Wiggle to the Panhandle. Some local merchants are opposed to the plan because of a significant loss of parking in the neighborhood. This is a classic case of where our higher intentions meet the limitations of our immediate resources. The details of the plan follow. Please let us know what you think, and why.
- The project will require the removal of about 80-100 parking spaces, primarily on the south side of Oak Street and the south side of Fell Street between Scott and Baker streets. The SFMTA is investigating options to offset this loss of parking and estimates that about 40 parking spaces can be added on nearby streets by converting parallel parking to perpendicular parking. The SFMTA is also investigating how residential permit parking could free up additional parking spaces for area residents.
- In addition to bikeway improvements, this project will include pedestrian safety and comfort improvements such as bulb-outs, crosswalk enhancements and plantings. The bikeway improvements will also reduce bicycle sidewalk riding.
