At Folk Yoga, we believe that yoga is more than just a practice on the mat—it’s a way of showing up in the world. It’s about creating space for all bodies, voices, and experiences. As we celebrate Pride Month here in San Francisco, we honor our core values of diversity, inclusivity, and community, which are deeply woven into the soul of our studio.
But Pride is more than parades and glitter (though we love those, too). It’s rooted in resistance, in resilience, and in the radical act of showing up as your full self.
✨ A Note from David Nelson, Founder of Folk Yoga
Hi folks—David here from Folk Yoga.
I wanted to share something personal as we celebrate Pride Month here in San Francisco. My first Pride was in 1980, right here. Back then, it wasn’t just a celebration—it was a demonstration. We were fighting to be seen, to be treated equally. And just after that, the AIDS epidemic hit, and everything changed.
We came together to live fully, to love fiercely, and to demand that the world pay attention.
Over the years, Pride has grown into something joyful and vibrant. And that’s beautiful. But today, with so many hard-won rights under threat, I want to gently remind us—Pride is still political.
When the rights of any group are rolled back, all of our rights are at risk. So let’s celebrate, yes—but also recommit. Let’s stand up for each other. That’s what community looks like.
Happy Pride, everyone. 🏳️🌈
💛 What Pride Means to Us
At Folk, we strive to make yoga accessible to all—regardless of gender, race, body, identity, or ability. We believe everyone deserves to feel safe and seen in their practice. That means more than rainbow flags in June. It means showing up for each other all year long.
This month, we’re offering Pride-themed classes, centering queer voices in wellness, and holding space for deeper reflection and celebration. Because healing and liberation—just like yoga—are collective practices.
