Pride at Folk Yoga ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ Community, Belonging, and the Practice of Showing Up

Pride Month is a celebration, but it’s also a reminder.

A reminder that communities are built by people who choose to show up for one another. That belonging doesn’t happen by accident. And that creating spaces where people feel safe, seen, and welcome is ongoing work.

At Folk Yoga, these values have been part of our story since the beginning.

Since 1998, we’ve had the privilege of serving generations of San Franciscans through movement, connection, and community. Over the years, our studios have welcomed students from all walks of life, backgrounds, identities, and experiences. While much has changed in the city over the last three decades, one thing has remained constant: our belief that yoga should be accessible to everyone.

As a studio founded and led by a gay owner, and with roots that started from serving the vibrant Castro neighborhood to now NOPA, Richmond & Mission neighborhoods, Pride isn’t something we observe from the outside. It’s woven into the communities that have shaped us and helped us become who we are today.

Diversity Makes Us Stronger

One of Folk’s core values is diversity.

Not because it’s trendy. Not because it’s expected. But because we genuinely believe our community is stronger when people from different backgrounds, identities, perspectives, and lived experiences come together.

Every student who walks through our doors brings something unique to the room.

Yoga teaches us to be present with ourselves. Community teaches us to be present with one another.

We need both.

More Than a Yoga Studio

Yoga can be many things.

It can be a workout. A form of self-care. A place to challenge yourself physically.

But for many people, it can also be something else entirely.

A place to exhale.

A place to be yourself.

A place to walk into a room and feel like you belong.

We’ve always believed that community is one of the most powerful parts of practice. The relationships built before class, the conversations after, the familiar faces that become friends over timeโ€”these moments matter.

Especially in a world that can often feel disconnected.

Pride Is About Belonging

At its heart, Pride is about belonging.

It’s about creating a world where people don’t have to shrink themselves to fit in. Where authenticity is celebrated rather than hidden. Where every person can show up fully as themselves.

Those are values we strive to embody not just in June, but every day of the year.

Whether you’re brand new to yoga or have been practicing for decades, whether you’re part of the LGBTQ+ community or an ally, whether you’re stepping into the studio for the first time or the thousandthโ€”we want you to know that there is a place for you here.

Celebrating Together

This Pride Month, we’re celebrating the communities that continue to make Folk what it is: welcoming, diverse, joyful, and deeply human.

To everyone who has practiced with us over the years, shared space with us, trusted us with a piece of their journey, or simply walked through our doors looking for connectionโ€”thank you.

We’re honored to practice alongside you.

Happy Pride.

With gratitude,

The Folk Yoga Team
