WORKSHOP Free to Fly : Handstands

Exploring Handstands

with Karen Macklin & Ariel Mihic

handstand workshopStanding on your hands offers physical, energetic, and emotional benefits for everyone. It strengthens our wrists and fingers, opens our shoulders, helps us to be more playful, and offers us a new perspective from which to view the world. Handstands also teach us how to be more fearless and free—on and off the mat.

This popular handstand workshop-taught by Karen Macklin and Ariel Mihic-will help new handstanders to build the strength and courage needed to go upside down with stability and ease, and will offer refinements and new entries into the pose for more experienced handstanders. The workshop will include an energetic flow, partner work, strength-training exercises, and meditation. Bring your willingness and a sense of humor!
Prerequisites: Ease and stability in plank and downward facing dog (you can hold for one minute each).

This course provides 3 Elective Contact Hours for YGSF500 and/or 3 Yoga Alliance® CEUs

Karen Macklin (RYT-500) has been studying yoga and meditation since 2000 and has received training in the yoga traditions of Ashtanga, Iyengar, Shadow Yoga, AcroYoga, Therapeutic, and Restorative, as well as in various forms of Buddhist meditation, yogic philosophy, and the science of Ayurveda. She has studied with many wonderful teachers, and has been most influenced by Scott Blossom, Sean Feit, Chisandra Fox, Gary Kraftsow, and Jason Crandell.
She teaches with an emphasis on building internal and external strength, creating mindfulness, and establishing a deep connection with the energetic body. Her classes are typically strong but slow, rhythmic flows that incorporate hands-on adjustments, verbal alignment cues, and an opportunity for students to enter a space of meditation and inquiry. Karen has also written about yoga for Yoga Journal, Yoga International, FitYoga, Tricycle, San Francisco Weekly, and the San Francisco Bay Guardian.

Ariel Mihic is a yogini with a passion for adventure and an insatiable curiosity to live a life less ordinary. She is an Ashtangi at heart, though her practice has evolved into all shapes and sizes, and lots more upside-down time. Ariel currently teaches as part of the YogaSlackers, sharing the modalities of AcroYoga, slackline yoga, acrobatics, and Thai massage. She redefines balance in every aspect of her life, finding passion in the endless search for wisdom, compassion, and the elusive art of slowing down.

Ariel has been blessed to cross paths with many talented and inspiring teachers. She offers much gratitude to those who have helped pave the path, remove the limitations, and set the bar just slightly out of reach (nothing like a good challenge!): Jason and Chelsey Magness, Jason&Jenny, Larry Schultz, Don&Amba Stapleton. Ariel has a Doctorate in Pharmacy and certifications in the following yoga disciplines: Ashtanga, AcroYoga, YogaSlackers, Thai Massage/Thai Foot Reflexology/Pranassage.
